As Road lights and Post Top lights are used in outdoor applications, they have to withstand various weather conditions and vandalism while offering a long-term, reliable illumination with close to zero need for maintenance. Street lights serve as an important solution in public security lighting in order to help reduce crime and to allow safe movement of transport. Sylvania’s Road and Post Lights include at least 6kV surge protection to avoid voltage spikes. These are transient events, typically 1 to 30 microseconds only, but may reach over 10 KV / 10 KA – and such an effect may harm or completely destroy electronic devices connected to the given network. This is why surge protection is elementary for road lights, too.
